I think that socialist guard rails on capitalism is the way to go. We should be motivated to invent new products and processes, but we need to recognize that a country is only as strong as it’s weakest citizen. Maybe we institute wage gap laws, pump money into schools, fund infrastructure improvements further, and make the rich pay their taxes! The rich would stay obscenely rich, but our kids would come up in a better world than we ever had. Isn’t that the goal? Leave this place better than it was when it was left to you.

Except it’s just untrue that every time something has gone wrong because Eastern Europe never had a monopoly on systems people could describe as socialist. Plus there’s also the common sense fact that blaming all of the issues and all of the bad things that occurred at that time on the economic system is pretty daft like no the how the governments and leaders acted was a major issue like a despot, corruption and lack of democracy is a easy path to a shit ton of issues regardless of what economic system is used. Plus socialism is a pretty damn broad thing, like those activists are generally seeking democratic socialism or social democracy neither being represented by the ussr in fact for social democracy that’s literally just what most Nordic countries are.
