What movie do you think could be the Top Gun Maverick/Barbie of 2024?

Predicting the top movie of 2024 is a challenging task as it depends on various factors such as trends, audience preferences, and industry developments. However, considering the success of previous films like "Top Gun" and the popularity of iconic characters like Barbie, we can speculate on a potential movie that could capture the same level of excitement and cultural impact in 2024.

One possible contender for the top movie of 2024 could be a reboot or a fresh take on a beloved franchise, similar to "Top Gun: Maverick." This film, released in 2021, successfully tapped into the nostalgia of the original 1986 "Top Gun" movie while introducing new elements and a new generation of characters. It combined high-octane action sequences, breathtaking aerial stunts, and a charismatic lead in Tom Cruise, appealing to both fans of the original and a younger demographic.

In 2024, a movie that could capture a similar blend of nostalgia and contemporary appeal is a live-action adaptation of a popular animated series or video game franchise. For example, a live-action version of the animated series "Avatar: The Last Airbender" could generate immense anticipation and excitement. The original series, which aired from 2005 to 2008, has a massive fan base and is widely regarded as one of the best animated shows of all time. A live-action adaptation with stunning visuals, epic battles, and a well-crafted story could attract fans of the original series as well as new audiences.

Another possibility for a top movie of 2024 could be a film centered around a beloved toy or iconic character, similar to the upcoming "Barbie" movie. The Barbie franchise has been a cultural phenomenon for decades, and the upcoming live-action film starring Margot Robbie is expected to capitalize on the character's popularity while also offering a fresh and empowering narrative. In 2024, a similar movie that could capture the imagination of audiences might be a live-action adaptation of a popular video game character, such as Lara Croft from the "Tomb Raider" series. A well-crafted and action-packed film that showcases the character's adventurous spirit, combined with strong storytelling and stunning visuals, could have the potential to become a box office hit.

Ultimately, predicting the top movie of 2024 is speculative, but considering the success of films like "Top Gun: Maverick" and the anticipation surrounding the "Barbie" movie, a live-action adaptation of a beloved franchise or a movie centered around an iconic character could have the potential to capture the attention and excitement of audiences in 2024.

January: unless Bob Marley has suddenly become less beloved among stoners, One Love. February: Dirty Dancing is to Gen X women what Top Gun is to Gen X men. May: if Garfield connects, this one has endless potential. November: Gladiator 2.

If it’s able to hit its release date, maybe a small chance for Wicked. It’s been going for 20 years now and still plays to packed houses, with its various productions hitting around $8-$10 million a week with limited capacity. (Edit: this is all the productions combined) Though, it’s biggest drawback is going to be being a two-parter (a creative decision I personally support, but I understand why other people might not).

Saw some early footage of it at Cinemacon, seems heartwarming and fun. In that realm of live action family film mixed with CGI. Think Paddington, Clifford, and Lyle Lyle Crocodile. But I'm unsure on the title. I know IF stands for Imaginary Friend, but even when Krasinski came out to talk about it and they showed the font...it has this horror vibe in the realm of Get Out, Us, Nope with the title IF. But obviously showing the footage, it's not that at all. Don't know if it will be a hit, bomb, or just do alright.

I'm going with the longest of long shots but John Krasinski's IF. All-star cast & crew, Krasinski's been able to make an original franchise before with A Quiet Place, its not another superhero movie or nostalgia-driven reboot.

Unless it's a disaster, I could maybe see Inside Out 2 doing Finding Dory numbers.

@Steven Holmes You don't need a particularly in-depth investigation - Barbie is the most popular girls toy in history and the quality of the film, from what I've heard, is good. That's it. It also has been boosted by the 'Barbenheimer' thing.

I admit it, I didn't have faith in Barbie. For years we have seen movie after movie pushing feminism come out and movie after movie has bombed, so I figured Barbie would be the same. Studios should investigate what the difference was between those movies and Barbie because somewhere in there must be an important lesson. I think a difference is that audiences expect a Barbie movie to be that way, but they don't expect a long running franchise to suddenly jump on the trend. Also the Barbie trailers put the story first, a lot of movie trailers put the feminist messaging ahead of the story and that's not much of a selling point. We go there primarily for good stories, it is expensive for most people to go they want a good time.

Maybe in another sub because looking back at the older posts of this place, people had very little faith in Barbie.

Honestly, as much as I use that term, I think the better way to describe an unexpected massive hit is a film that will have a multi-generation appeal to pretty much everyone.
